Concerts to benefit fire departments

by Adam Jacobs

A pair of big-time names are taking their act to small-town fire departments this winter.

Veteran musician Morgan Davis and CBC host Stan Carew will be performing together around mainland Nova Scotia this winter in what's been dubbed the "Mitts and Boots Winter Tour."

Beginning in January the duo will play a series of shows in support of volunteer fire departments.

"At first we thought it was crazy to tour Nova Scotia in the winter because the weather was so unpredictable," said Mr. Davis. "Then it dawned on us that the firefighters were out in every kind of weather, so if they could do it, we could as well. If there's a blizzard raging and we have to cancel, we'll reschedule."

Mr. Davis is a resident of Blandford, which is also the former home of Mr. Carew.

Both have needed the services of the Blandford volunteer fire department in the past and talked about doing a show at the fire hall there to express their gratitude.

The idea was hatched when the men ran into each other at a local garage to get their snow tires put on.

After a brief chat it occurred to them most small fire departments were in need of funds and the idea was born.

The shows promise to be appealing to a large audience of people.

"Blues and country back roads often intersect," Mr. Davis said. "We're going to take a ride down those roads and play some songs that people know by heart, as well as some of our own."

No official schedule has been released to date.
