Looking Back with Carol WileChummy Oickle's brilliant hockey playing Seventy-five years ago from the files of the Bridgewater Bulletin, dated January 2, 1934.
The local church league was officially opened before a large and enthusiastic juvenile audience who voiced their cheers in a childish treble as the Grace United Juniors eked out a close triumph from Trinity by the score of 2 to 1. St. John's United senior sextet swept through St. Paul's Lutherans with the score standing 8 to 1 at the end of the game, and the third and final game saw the Lutheran Eagles, a junior aggregation, shut out the St. John's United Rangers, 3 to 9. The sensation of the day was "Chummy Oickle", a rugged bit of a miniature manhood from St. Phillips who seems destined to become one of Canada's foremost hockeyists at the rate he is going. The crowd squealed with delight at Chummy's tremendously clever stick handling - and can he skate? Like a whirlwind. All that keeps him out of senior hockey is his size (he is about eight winter's old), but from the standpoint of graceful style and hockey brains he bows to no one in this town. Chummy scored all the goals of the game, three in the second period and all of them cleverly executed as he weaved through the bewildered opposition with his rapier like offensive thrusts. The church league hockey games create a wonderful spirit among the boys, crammed with action and good natured rivalry. posted on 01/13/09 |
