'Glimpses' returns to centre stage this summer

Popular local singer-songwriter Jon Allen is part of a 12-member troupe who will be presenting a series of historical musical vignettes entitled "Glimpses" at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic and other venues this summer.
The popular series of historical Lunenburg vignettes entitled "Glimpses" will be back for 2009 with a longer and more expanded program.

The show, which premiered last summer at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic theatre in Lunenburg, will run three nights each week beginning July 9.

Veteran performer Jon Allen, who with colleagues Vince Morash and Dave Brumwell wrote much of the words and music for the show, says that based on last year's inaugural success, the group decided to expand "Glimpses" to about an hour and a quarter in length from its original 45 minutes.

Subjects of the vignettes include Lunenburg's famous schooner Bluenose, St. John's Anglican Church fire, Lunenburg Academy and the sacking of the town by American privateers, as well as new sections on rum running, the Young Teazer and a visit to the doctor's office in the 1700s.

"It's a look at our history through scene and song," Mr. Allen said. "Last year we had approximately 1,000 people attend and it gradually improved by word of mouth as word got out. It was really very gratifying with a good response from visitors and locals alike."

Along with their regular weekly performances at the museum, which will be admission by donation, there will also be several special performances with an admission charge.

Proceeds from this year's shows, which will be performed by a 12-member summer troupe, are earmarked in support of the Lunenburg Heritage Society and the Mahone Bay Founders Society.

Regular performances at the museum will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. as well as Sundays at 3:30 p.m. until September 13. No shows will take place on August 2, 4 and 6.

Special "on the road" shows include a Mahone Bay Centre fundraiser June 20, Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival on August 1 at the town wharf, Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival August 7 and 8 beginning at noon at the Fisheries Museum, the Lunenburg Yacht Club August 14 and the Lunenburg Waterfront Seafood Festival September 14.
