Hebbville Academy's home and school association will host its annual fall bazaar on October 17 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Money raised will be used to provide social activities and supplies to help enrich the students' school environment. Last year, the association bought things for the school such as hockey jerseys for the junior high team, a sewing machine for family studies and microwaves for the cafeteria, besides its usual contributions, which include student citizenship awards and providing lunches, school supplies and other items to students in need. Afghanistan talk Scott Taylor, the editor of the military magazine Esprit de Corps, will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Blandford and Area Historical Society at the Blandford community centre at 7:30 p.m., October 21. Mr. Taylor spent some time in Afghanistan as a reporter and was kidnapped by the Taliban. Fortunately he was released but not before going through some very difficult experiences. He will touch upon this traumatic time in his life and also comment on his view of the state of affairs in that country at the present time and the role of the Canadian military. Mr. Taylor also writes a weekly column for The Chronicle Herald Memorial hymn sing planned Central United Church, Lunenburg, is presenting its sixth memorial hymn sing on November 1 at 7 p.m. advertisement The public is invited to attend this special musical evening. In addition to the congregational hymns, many of the church family will be sharing their special musical talents, including Les Mason, Katie Glen, Brittany Corkum, Amy Smith, Paul Reeves, Vicki Gray, Diane MacDonald, Mary Knickle, Heather Kristenson and the senior and junior choirs. Anyone interested in sponsoring a hymn in memory of a friend or loved one should phone the office at 634-4035 on or before October 22. There also will be a free will offering. Proceeds from this event will be used for the ongoing upkeep of our church. Church anniversary The First South United Church will celebrate its 122nd anniversary on October 18 at 7 p.m. The guest minister will be Rev. Vivian Moores. There will be music and refreshments and everyone is welcome. Attic art and collectibles The Lunenburg Art Gallery is soliciting items for their annual Attic Art and Collectible Sale, slated to take place at the Lunenburg fire hall November 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items may be dropped off at the gallery November 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., November 4 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and November 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and at the fire hall November 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Organizers ask that no electrical items, large furniture or Reader's Digest books be donated. Food bank fundraiser A group of talented local musicians are teaming up for a live outdoor concert in aid of Feed Nova Scotia. An Afternoon of Music will take place at Shipyards Landing, Bridgewater, October 17 beginning at 2 p.m. Live acts will include Dylan Cormier, The Green Reflectors, The Cusack Boys, and Samm Fisher, among others.
