Ottawa promises $404,000 for park, riverfront upgradesby Keith Corcoran BRIDGEWATER - Ottawa is promising the biggest wave of money for the initial step of a waterfront revitalization project in Bridgewater.
MP Gerald Keddy announced October 15 the federal government will spend $404,416 toward a job that includes building a floating gazebo, gangway ramp, look-off point, and interpretive panels at King Street Court park and installation of a removable fountain in the LaHave River between the town's main bridges. Waterfront improvements along the LaHave River within town limits has long been talked about with not as much action to back it up as some would like. This first step in a multi-year plan will help attract people to the downtown and aid that business district. "The proof will be in the results; we're all aware of that," Mr. Keddy told a news conference, "but we have an opportunity here in Phase 1 to give the river back to Bridgewater and I think that's what the intent is and I believe in all my heart that's what the result will be." The project will do wonders for the town's tourism prospects and its economy, Mayor Carroll Publicover said. "Many various waterfront schemes have come and gone over the past 20 years but I'm here to tell you today our present plan is about to come to life." The federal money represents most of the estimated $525,000 price tag attached to the King Street Court project. The town and province previously chipped in money. The Bridgewater Development Association (BDA), a society tasked with promoting economic activity in town, is steering the project. Association manager Ida Scott said improvements to King Street Court will be a new jewel in the crown that is the LaHave River. Work on the park will start later this year and finish next summer. In a published tender, an engineering consulting firm is taking bids for the job until October 21. posted on 10/20/09 |
