H1N1 vaccination available

Everyone can now receive flu shot
by Paula Levy

The H1N1 vaccine is now available to everyone. Public health opened the vaccine clinics to more than the target groups last week.
COUNTY - Public health has opened its H1N1 vaccine clinics to everyone as of November 20.

Public health officer Dr. Robert Strang announced there is no longer a shortage and the vaccine is now available to everyone.

"Since the beginning, Nova Scotians have shown patience as we have rolled out our immunization campaign to those most at risk first," said Dr. Strang. "Over the coming weeks, we anticipate a steady supply of vaccine, which is why we have decided to open it to everyone."

South Shore Health communicable disease manager Lori McCracken said there is enough vaccine available for everyone who wants it.

"We have plenty for our clinics this week and will continue to receive shipments on a weekly basis," confirmed Ms McCracken in a telephone interview.

Ms McCracken said there is no need for everyone to go for the vaccine immediately. She said there will be a steady supply coming into the local public health office on a weekly basis.

As of Thursday last week, about 15,000 doses of the vaccine had already been given out in Lunenburg and Queens counties. She said since the beginning, over 8,000 of those vaccines have been put in the hands of physicians. Ms McCracken noted that physicians will also be able to get a weekly supply of the vaccine for their patients.

Ms McCracken said the area will continue to get about 8,000 doses a week until everyone who wants the vaccine can get it.

Ms McCracken noted that it is not necessary for everyone to come out to the earliest clinics because the province is not expected to experience any more shortages.

Tuesday, a public clinic will be held at the New Ross Consolidated School from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday in Chester from 1 to 6 p.m. at St. Stephen's Anglican parish hall and Thursday in Caledonia.
