'That Penis Thing' makes triumphant return

by Robert Hirtle

 It’s back.

“That Penis Thing,” a hilarious, homegrown comedy show which took the South Shore by storm last spring returns for an encore presentation with a new cast member and some new material.

Written by noted Mahone Bay author and thespian Dave Brumwell, “That Penis Thing” is a series of comedic vignettes that, while adult in the nature of their content, are not designed to be pornographic nor embarrassing to anyone.

They in fact exude a “Monty Pythonesque” flavour, a reflection of Mr. Brumwell’s long-standing appreciation of the British comedy troupe that gained international popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

“This is really unique. We talk about every subject you can think of and we try to make it incredibly funny,” Mr. Brumwell says, adding that men have a tendency not to talk about their problems.

“We just don’t. We go to the doctor, maybe, when it gets really serious,” he explains. “But women, if they have problems with, say, their sex life or something like that, they’ll talk to a friend about it.”

He believes that addressing men’s sexual problems in a humorous way might make them become more aware that there is help available to improve their situation should they need it or want it.

Once again this year the show will be directed by Mahone Bay’s Sherry Dean, who says that the word “penis” is still taboo and “will always make people a little uncomfortable.

“But it is a part of every man’s body and without it none of us would be reading this article,” she says. “How can anything that important be considered an improper subject to put in print or provide us with a couple of hours of entertainment and fun?”

Last year “That Penis Thing” raised over $16,000, all of which was donated to a variety of community projects in the area and Mr. Brumwell says he hopes the troupe will receive the same response in its encore season.

“The show has taken the South Shore by storm with many people going to watch it two, three and even four times,” he says. “One lady commented that she missed so much through laughing that she had to see it twice more before she saw the complete show.”

“That Penis Thing” opens its 2010 run at the Liverpool fire hall March 27, followed by the Chester Legion April 3, Lunenburg’s Pearl Theatre April 10, New Ross Legion May 1, Bridgewater Legion May 15 and the Petite Riviere fire hall May 29.
