Egg Roll King marks 25 years of excellent food and customer service in Bridgewater

by Patrick Hirtle

The staff at Egg Roll King, including Jennifer Latham, Shelly Wentzell, Kyle Wong, Kenny Wong, Julie Wong, Melanie Hubley, Sherry Smith and Coleen Wamboldt, are happy to mark the restaurant's 25th anniversary in 2010.

"One of the nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating." - Luciano Pavarotti

Perched atop Dufferin Hill in Bridgewater, Egg Roll King has been dishing out great food and fantastic service for 25 years at Bridgewater Plaza.

Owners Kenny and Julie Wong have watched their restaurant grow and blossom over the past quarter century, although, as Mr. Wong noted, it sometimes is hard to believe so much time has passed so quickly.

"It started in 1985 and when we started it was a smaller location," Mr. Wong explained. That locale was actually in the space next door to the current Egg Roll King home, to where the business relocated to in 1990.

"After five years, we moved here and we've just kept working," Mr. Wong said. "Time goes so fast when you keep working."
Mr. Wong, who has over 30 years of food preparation experience, first opened the doors to Egg Roll King alongside his father, who passed away in 1988.

Now he and his wife, Julie, and the staff of about 10 are proud to continue serving Bridgewater and clients from around the entire South Shore a fantastic selection of food.

The menu has changed and grown over the years, much to the delight of customers, offering wider tastes and delicacies.

"We have changed the menu, putting more and different items on it than when we started," Mr. Wong noted.

"We try to serve good food at a good price and we do a pretty good job," he added. "We still have the luncheon special and a lot of people like it — portions are smaller, but prices are lower and we do it as fast as we can."

And, as Ms Wong noted, keeping the food fresh and bursting with taste is always an important part of the service at Egg Roll King and she thinks it's something that has kept people coming back for a quarter century.

"We make everything from scratch and sometimes we're busy and people have to wait. We don't make anything ahead — everything is fresh and that's how people like it," she said.

"That's why we've lasted this long," Mr. Wong said with a smile. "We're working in the kitchen ourselves and we keep the food at the same level. It's really important because our food is produced fresh and the price is really good."

"Some people do come in twice a week," Ms Wong added. "So, we really want to give them good service and good food. It's our way of thanking the customers, new and old."

While the duo are apologetic that they can no longer offer delivery service, because of the growth and increased traffic in Bridgewater — they do not want customers to have to wait for their food — they hope patrons will continue to come to them and enjoy the fully licenced and air conditioned Egg Roll King location at Bridgewater Plaza which, they agreed, has proven to be wonderful over the years.

It's perfect to accommodate a buffet suited for parties with any budget‚ whether celebrating a wedding, birthday, retirement or even Christmas dinner.

Not only that, but they have a great landlord, Ms Wong said, ample parking and all kinds of nearby shopping amenities, meaning that Egg Roll King is not only a delicious place to dine, but convenient too.
