Three women struck at Bridgewater crosswalk

by Keith Corcoran

First responders tend to one of the three women struck by a car April 7 in a Bridgewater crosswalk.
BRIDGEWATER - Three college classmates sustained bumps and cuts April 7 after a car slammed into them at the High Street crosswalk.

Information communicated by paramedics to South Shore Regional Hospital indicated that a 54-year-old woman injured her shoulder and hip and had possible broken ribs.

Paramedics said a 26-year-old woman hurt her shoulder and had a possible broken leg. The third woman, whose age was not immediately available, had a bump to the head.

The injured women are in the continuing care program together at the Nova Scotia Community College - Lunenburg Campus. The crosswalk, which is closest to the college and a coffee shop, is marked and has an overhead light mechanism.

On their lunch break Cameron McNair, 29, was following his classmates across High Street. When an approaching car wasn't stopping he yelled for them to get out of the way and tried to protect the classmate within his closest reach.

'The car hit them,' he told this newspaper as paramedics loaded the last of the injured people into an ambulance. 'They went up on the hood, rolled off the side on the road.'

 He then pointed north.

'The car went down that way and stopped down there.'

A 79-year-old Lunenburg County man, who identified himself as the driver of a Ford Taurus that struck the women, told this newspaper that he didn't see anyone until his vehicle made contact.

'I said "Holy God, what did I hit?'' the man said when asked about the crash. 'I couldn't believe it; after, I got out of the car and looked back and seen somebody laying in the road. I couldn't believe it.'

Police said in a news release that the pedestrians were in the crosswalk when the crash occurred.

Authorities had an analyst investigating the scene, which prompted a temporary closure of a section of High Street to traffic. Police want any witnesses to contact them.

Meanwhile, Mr. McNair couldn't believe what happened to his friends.

'I'm in shock because I've never seen anything like that before.'

There was no immediate information available on the women's condition and police are still looking into the matter.
