Research shows about seven active and two inactive Lunenburg County lighthouses are on the list.
The lighthouses in question are located at the Battery Point Breakwater, Cross Island, Kaulbach Island Front Range, Mosher Island and Pearl Island, Lunenburg harbour. Two East Ironbound Island lighthouses are also listed.
Ottawa last week declared about 480 active and 490 inactive lighthouses across Canada surplus to its needs and now, under newly enacted legislation, the properties are available to the public for purchase.
The Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act allows for the lighthouses to be used for other purposes "as long as they are maintained in a manner consistent with established conservation practices," the Fisheries and Oceans website reads.
South Shore-St. Margarets MP Gerald Keddy said the move allows for interested community groups to take ownership. He used the Battery Point beacon as an example where that scenario could work. Other signals, he suggested, the federal government could protect for heritage purposes.
He said the divestiture process lasted years to get to this point and he noted it will be impossible to save all the lighthouses. Lights will remain operational in locations where navigational aides are needed.
The Battery Point Breakwater is located in Lunenburg harbour and measures eight metres in height above water. It dates back to 1937, information provided by the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society shows.
There have been three lighthouses on Pearl Island, located near Mahone Bay. The existing one measures 18 metres in height above water.
The Mosher Island lighthouse is in the area of the LaHave River. Its measurements were not available on the society's website. The lighthouse dates back to 1868.
The Kaulbach Island front range light dates back to 1914 and stands about 11 metres high above water. It's located near Mahone Bay.
The Cross Island lighthouse, located at Lunenburg Bay, was established in 1832, the society reports. It stands 25 metres above water.
Standing 44 metres above water, the lighthouse at East Ironbound Island is located near Mahone Bay.
There was no information on the Lunenburg harbour lighthouse on the society's website.
