Young ReadersStuck in an elevator Kayla Pig couldn't believe that she was actually in New York City. She had saved her allowance for a long time in a miniature piggy bank. All the missed treats were worth it, she thought, as she looked out the taxi window at the skyscrapers. The streets were jammed with cars and people, as Kayla Pig's head turned back and forth so not to miss a thing.
The taxi pulled in front of a Broadway theatre and Kayla Pig's heart skipped a beat as she saw Brad Porcupine and Robin worthog's names in big print on the marquee. Quickly, she paid the taxi driver and stepped onto the curb. Looking down at her new pink dress with a tie, Kayla Pig knew she looked her best. Purchasing her ticket, she rushed to her seat. The talking around her stilled as the house lights went down and the curtain opened. There in front of her on the big screen were her favourite actors, and Kayla Pig's full attention was riveted to their every move. At intermission, Kayla Pig rushed out into the lobby. An elevator to her left had a sign saying "Enjoy fabulous view of New York City from observation deck during intermission." Not wanting to spend what little money she had left on snacks, Kayla Pig got into the elevator with Pepper Horse and his date named Crystal. "Are you enjoying the show?" asked Pepper Horse. "Oh, very much!" said Kayla Pig. "I like your dress," said Crystal in a long, green skirt and shiny, gold top. "I like your hair," said Kayla Pig. "Shania Tiger wears it like this," said Crystal, running her hoof through it. Suddenly the elevator jerked and halted between floors. Kayla Pig tumbled to the floor and was helped to her feet by Pepper Horse. Pepper Horse then pushed all the buttons, but nothing happened. "Help!" yelled the three. Crystal grabbed the emergency phone and gave their location to the maintenance man. advertisement "How long will it be before we get out?" asked Kayla Pig, knowing in her heart that she wouldn't get to see the second part of the movie. "About two hours, he thinks," said Crystal. "Looks like we are stuck here, whether we like it, or not." Much later, the elevator made its descent to the main floor. The theatre was dark and only a single kernel of popcorn on the rug hinted that a crowd had been there before. "I am so sorry for your disastrous elevator ride," said the manager. "And because you didn't get to see the rest of the show, rooms have been arranged with meals so that you can attend tomorrow's performance, free of charge." The trio were overjoyed and quickly accepted the manager's offer. Question about the story: What happened to Kayla Pig in the elevator when it jerked to a stop?
