Three people face charges in connection with West Dublin fire

WEST DUBLIN — Three people are facing arson, break-in and theft-related charges in connection to a seven-alarm fire July 28 that ravaged the former Rissers General Store in West Dublin.

Lunenburg County RCMP arrested two youths — one male and one female — and one adult male. The charges specifically are arson, break and enter with intent and theft not exceeding $5,000.

The girl appeared in Bridgewater provincial court the morning of July 29. The others will appear September 29.

Nearby resident David Rackham told Global News that he saw three people leave the area on bicycles minutes before smoke started billowing out of the building.

Police continue to investigate.

Rissers General Store, operated by Gerald and Joanne Risser, was an active convenience store and gas station up until about seven years ago. Since then, the Highway 331 property has been used for storage.

Daughter, Sandra Risser, said the gas tanks were removed a year ago and the building had no electricity and wasn't insured.

"It had all of the old store supplies in it," she said as firefighters used hose lines at several angles to water down the fire scene.

Also inside were family photographs, winter gear and equipment and Ms Risser's stained-glass supplies.

The LaHave volunteer fire department was dispatched to the 4600 block of Highway 331 just after 6 p.m., July 28.

Additional fire crews from Italy Cross, Bridgewater, Pleasantville, Petite Riviere, Conquerall Bank and from the United Communities fire department were also summoned to the scene with trucks and manpower.

The structure, which became engulfed in flames, was destroyed.

Firefighters remained on scene for hours. Motor vehicle traffic in the area was restricted as a result of the emergency scene. Electrical service was also disrupted in the area.
