Looking Back with Carol WileLocal boys receive wings Sixty-seven years ago from the files of the Bridgewater Bulletin, dated August 18, 1943.
Three Bridgewater boys who received their wings within two weeks of each other's are Pilot Officer Arthur (Bud) Fraser, Wendell Meldrum and Melvin Feener. Arthur is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ingram Fraser, Bridgewater. He graduated from Bridgewater High School in June 1940 with honours and worked in Montreal as office clerk until July, 1942, when he enlisted in the Air Force. He has been granted his commission as Pilot Officer and will report at Summerside, PEI on August 21, 1943. Melvin is a son of Rufus Feener, an employee of the CNR and the late Mrs. Feener, Bridgewater. He, too, graduated from the Bridgewater High School with honours in 1940 and enlisted in the Air Force in August 1942. After graduating he enlisted in the Air Force ad was sent to Toronto for basic training, then to Belleville, and Pendleton, Ontario and Moncton, NB. Wendell is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hazen Meldrum, also of Bridgewater graduating from Bridgewater High School with honours in 1942. He rejected a special Dalhousie University Scholarship to join the Air Force in June of that year. He received his training at Lachine, Mont Joli, Victoriaville, Cap de la Madelaine, Que., and Moncton, NB, where he will receive his wings, August 20, 1943.
