SuperWalk in support of Parkinson society planned for this Sunday![]() Lunenburg-Queens County Parkinson's Support Group chairwoman Chris McBain and past chairwoman Maureen Brisson are trying on running shoes in preparation for the annual Parkinson SuperWalk to be held, September 12. The SuperWalk, a major fundraiser for the Parkinson society, starts from Gow's Home Hardware parking lot at 1:30 p.m. BRIDGEWATER - Every year, the Vogue Optical Parkinson SuperWalk is held in communities throughout the Maritimes.
It is the biggest fundraiser in support of the Parkinson society. But SuperWalk is also a statement, a show of strength and determination. A Parkinson's diagnosis changes the life not only of the individual, but that of family, friends, co-workers and those with whom the patient shares his or her life. SuperWalk is a symbol of the patients' drive and willingness to make these adaptations. Join a walk and you'll see people of all ages, faces brightened by smiles. Some move quickly, while others take their time enjoying the exercise and good company (of which there is always plenty). Experience with Parkinson's is the common denominator but it is the act of walking side by side that brings participants together. Striding in the face of adversity, defying a disease that makes each step so difficult - this is why we walk! Parkinson SuperWalk began 20 years ago, when seven members of a Toronto-based chapter of the Parkinson society organized themselves to walk in support of the society's work. In 10 years, the number of walks grew to 38, and were spread across the country. Canadians were donating generously. In 2000 over $600,000 was raised. This number would dramatically grow with each passing year. In 2002, the walk raised over $1 million in support of Canadians living with Parkinson's. By 2007, the figure was $2.1 million, meaning SuperWalkers had helped to nearly double the walk's revenue in just five years. Last year's Parkinson SuperWalk raised $2.7 million, thanks to 13,000 walkers in 87 locations across Canada. The Maritime contribution to this total was in excess of $200,000, an incredible contribution given our relatively small population. This year, Parkinson Society Maritime Region has set a fundraising goal of $250,000. It's a lofty aim, but one that is attainable. Monies raised will enable the society to fund education programs, support services and advocacy efforts. What's more, these funds help support Parkinson Society Canada's research initiatives, which are dedicated to science in search of a cure, and bettering the lives of those living now with Parkinson's. advertisement The local SuperWalk, hosted by the Lunenburg-Queens County Parkinson's Support Group and supported by the Kiwanis Club of Bluenose Golden "K," is being held September 12. Starting at Gow's parking lot, registration beings at 1 p.m. and walking starts at 1:30 p.m. There will be music and door prizes.
