Grass Mountain Hobos to performby Robert Hirtle The pride of O'Leary, Prince Edward Island, is coming to Lunenburg's Pearl Theatre January 15 as part of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival Concert Series.
The Grass Mountain Hobos, a six-member group made up of guitar player and vocalist Josh Ellis, guitarist Peter Cann, Peter Webb on banjo, Thomas Webb on bull fiddle, Thomas Kirkham on mandolin and fiddler Gordie MacKeeman, are no strangers to Lunenburg, having appeared in the 2008 Folk Harbour Festival after nabbing the last spot by winning the annual Lunenburg Folk Fiesta earlier that year and then returning again last summer. Describing their music as a "swing, bluegrass, blues and folk infusion," the group experienced a big year in 2010, winning an East Coast Music Award for Bluegrass Recording of the Year for their second CD, "Zoot," and capturing Entertainer of the Year at the Music PEI Awards Gala in January. The Hobos also played at Canada Olympic House during the 2010 Winter Games in February and appeared on "Live! With Regis and Kelly" in July, before touring the United Kingdom later in the summer. Opening for the 8 p.m. concert will be popular local favourites The Klunkers, featuring Paul MacLellan, Ron MacEachern and friends playing a mixture of blues, country, folk and Celtic music.
