Boxwood concerts slated

A quartet of concerts are slated for next week as part of the 13th annual Boxwood Festival which takes place July 24 to 30 in Lunenburg.

On July 24 Tempest Baroque featuring flutists David Greenberg, Philippe Allain-Dupré and Emer Mayock and harpsichord virtuoso Marie Bouchard will perform at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg.

The concert, described as "Folk meets baroque in 18th-century France, Scotland and Ireland," includes works by Vivaldi, Biber, Leclair, Telemann and others.

On July 27 the annual "Big Boxwood Ceilidh Dance" will be held at St. John's parish hall at 7:30 p.m.

Considered to be one of the best dances of the year in Nova Scotia, the event features the talents of caller Pauline Hingston, as well as a step-dancing demonstration by Jonathan Srour of "Lord of the Dance."

The festival's vocal concert will take place at Zion Lutheran Church July 29 at 7:30 p.m.

The program features Jefferson Hamer, accompanied by guitarist Eamon O'Leary, who will perform traditional songs of the sea, as well as tenor Edmund Brownless, a noted instructor in bel canto voice.

The festival's week of activities wraps up July 30 with Boxwood's finale concert which takes place at St. John's Anglican Church at 7:30 p.m.

Performers include Liz Carroll, one of today's most celebrated Irish fiddlers; Breton flute virtuoso Sylvain Barou; rhythm king Nick Halley; the Norman and Greenberg Duo; and much more.
