New book celebrates 25 years of Folk Harbour Festival

by Robert Hirtle

"Folk Harbour - The First 25 Years of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival," a new book chronicling the first quarter century of one of Eastern Canada's most popular annual musical events, will be launched at Concordat Suites, 150 Montague Street, Lunenburg, November 20 from 2 to 4 p.m.

The book, written by local author and historian Tom Sheppard, looks back at the festival from its humble beginnings in 1986 to its present form that features local musical talent and also attracts entertainers from all around the world.

Included are stories and quotes from founders such as Bill Placket, John Houston, Val and Earl Mister, Alma Houston, Ken Matheson and Lunenburg's Singing Cook, Jim Pitman, as well as a collection of photographs which capture the spirit of the festival through the passage of time.

Musical entertainment for the launch will include the Cusack Brothers and Suzie Vinnick, and the author will present a short reading and slide show of past festival highlights.

Ms Vinnick will also take to the stage for a November 19, 7:30 p.m. concert at the Pearl Theatre in Lunenburg, part of the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival Fall Concert Series.

Special guests for that event will be The Hupman Brothers.
