'The History of Sherwood' reprinted

by Adam Jacobs

In 1953 Herman Levy wrote the "History of Sherwood."

Fifty-eight years later the book has been reprinted.

"Because of [succeeding] generations there has been so much more interest in the book, in the history of Sherwood and of the Levys," said Linda Cann, daughter of Mr. Levy. "I get asked about the book all the time. But I always have to tell them it's out of print. So, we decided to print some more."

The 89-page book contains local genealogy and related history of the area including the story of the old Halifax Annapolis Road.

As for the Levys, the book traces all Levys born in Nova Scotia back to a double wedding in Lunenburg at St. John's Anglican Church, December 28, 1819.

Standing at the altar that day, before Rev. Roger Aitkin, were brothers David and Nathan Levy and their brides, Hannah and Catherine Low. The brides were sisters, whose grandparents, John and Catherine L'eau, came to Halifax from Montbeliard, France, in 1752.

Both the newlywed Levy couples, David and Hannah, and Nathan and Catherine, settled on Little Tancook Island. In 1826, David and Hannah moved to Sherwood, Lunenburg County, raising 13 children in what were then near wilderness conditions in this area of the Windsor-Chester Road.

"The History of Sherwood" can be purchased by contacting Linda Cann at 542-9101.
