Young ReadersCramped quarters cause two fish problems"Get over on your side!" snapped Dora Fish. "I don't even have room to think!" "It is you that is on my side," said Duke Fish. "As for thinking, how much room does that little brain need?" "Whatever size it is, it is bigger than your brain," said Dora, whisking her tail and heading in the other direction. Things were not going well in the goldfish bowl. Quarters were cramped, and Dora couldn't get away from Duke, and Duke couldn't get away from Dora. They were getting on each other's nerves and tempers were short. "We need a new home, Dora," said Duke one morning. "And how do you propose we go about that?" asked Dora. "If our owners decide that we should be in this bowl, you can't do anything about it." "Maybe we should show them how cramped we are," suggested Duke. "They aren't going to notice that," said Dora, defeated. "Now, don't give up so easy," said Duke. "Let me think!" "Well, do it on your own side," said Dora. advertisement Duke swam around in the little space he had and tried to come up with a solution. Getting the owners to notice was not going to be an easy job. They were busy, and other than feeding the fish and cleaning their water, they seldom looked at them. "We always look so excited when they feed us," said Duke. "We could put a pout on our faces!" "You pout," said Dora. "That will give me wrinkles!" "What about a hunger strike?" suggested Duke. "Do you think they would notice we weren't eating? "When we are floating upside down on the top of the water, I would think maybe then," said Dora. "Dora, you are so unwilling to try," said Duke. "You make me all depressed, because you drag me down too." Duke went to the farthest place he could in the bowl. He looked very sad. "He'll get over it," said Dora. "He'll get over it." But Duke didn't get over it. He pouted and sulked all day. The next morning he still was pouting. "He'll get over it," said Dora. "He'll get over it." All that day, Duke didn't get over it either. The next morning the owner came to clean the bowl. "Duke doesn't look very well," she said. "No, he doesn't," said her husband. "I think this bowl is too small for Duke and Dora," said the wife. "I saw a great aquarium at the store the other day. There is lots of room and a castle for them to play in." "I think you should get it. I hope it isn't too late for Duke," said the husband. That afternoon, the wife brought home a big aquarium. When it was properly filled and the filter system was working, the two fish were lowered into it. "Oh Duke, isn't this a great place?" asked Dora. "Didn't I tell you if I sulked and pouted, we would get a new home? You wouldn't listen," said Duke, going on and on. Dora swam away to a far corner, because now she could. Both fish were happy now. posted on 11/09/11 |
