Old mall property subject of more development promises

by Keith Corcoran

Promises are still being made as to when Bridgewater's old South Shore Mall property on the town's east side will be revamped into a massive commercial destination.

The latest tidbit about the 11-hectare North Street property came in a recently published Chronicle Herald story. The piece suggests some kind of revamping verdict pertaining to Ontario developer Louis Reznick's land could come down this month.

Mr. Reznick and Halifax architect Foster MacKenzie came to Bridgewater in February 2007 to explain details of a development project that would include construction of a 4,500-square-metre hotel, 1,350-square-metre conference centre and a pair of 50-unit residential complexes.

Mr. MacKenzie told the Chronicle Herald that he expected to hear something from Mr. Reznick this month as Mr. MacKenzie's architecture firm was asked about the cost, including that of renovations, of moving ahead with some aspects of the 2007 plan.

"I really have nothing to add to what I have told you in the past regarding the South Shore Mall," Mr. MacKenzie said in an e-mail to southshorenow.ca and the Lunenburg County Progress Bulletin.

"I have not spoken with the developer since early December."

The property manager for Mr. Reznick's company, Starfish Properties, told the Herald that aspects of the project were sent to contractors to gauge their opinion.

"Just because we might not move forward in the next couple of months does not mean the project is not going to happen," Rob Landry told the daily newspaper.

"It's just that right now, I think we're just assessing the information. It's a big undertaking and we've got a lot going on."

Mr. Landry didn't respond to a request for comment from southshorenow.ca and the Lunenburg County Progress Bulletin.

In 2010, Starfish Properties did build a two-storey 1,620-square-metre Lawtons Drugs and medical clinic on the North Street property.
