Young ReadersI'm too tough Sammy Rabbit was eating tender shoots of grass in the meadow. This was a real treat, as Sammy Rabbit was alone without his brothers and sisters that always followed him everywhere he went. Today, he had slipped away while they were having their morning bath.
"This is heaven!" said Sammy Rabbit munching away on a piece of clover. Monstro Killer Bat thought it was a great day, too, when he saw the young rabbit eating by himself in the meadow. That's what I like, he thought to himself, a rabbit all alone. I'll catch him off guard and then I'll have rabbit stew for supper. I need something soft for my toothache. Monstro Killer Bat spread his wings, soared through the air and landed in front of Sammy Rabbit. "Got ya!" said Monstro Killer Bat excitedly. "You will make a great rabbit stew for supper." "Rabbit stew?" moaned Sammy Rabbit. "Oh please, don't use me for rabbit stew!" "You're a rabbit, aren't you?" asked the bat. "Wiggly nose and fuzzy tail fits the description of a rabbit." "Squirrel stew can be good too!" said Sammy Rabbit trembling. "I don't want squirrel. I want rabbit!" demanded Monstro Killer Bat shaking Sammy Rabbit. "Rabbit meat is so tender that I'll have my first decent meal in days. This tooth is driving me crazy!" "Young rabbit is tender, but not an old rabbit like me," said Sammy Rabbit. "You're not old," said Monstro Killer Bat with a snort. advertisement "I'll have you know I'm 368 days old," said Sammy Rabbit crossing his arms. "Three hundred sixty-eight days? That does sound old," said Monstro Killer Bat rubbing his jaw. "My grandmother takes care of all the teeth in our family," said Sammy Rabbit. "Why don't you come home with me and see what she can do about your toothache. Then you could eat anything you wanted." "You would do that for me when I would have had you for supper?" asked the bat. Sammy Rabbit nodded and started across the meadow with the bat flying behind him. "Nana, Monstro Killer Bat has a toothache. Can you fix it?" asked Sammy Rabbit. Nana Rabbit looked alarmed seeing the bat and then got a string, tied it to the open door and the other end around Monstro Killer Bat's tooth. She slammed the door shut and out of Monstro Killer Bat's mouth popped his tooth. Monstro Killer Bat was very thankful to Nana Rabbit and Sammy Rabbit and went to hunt for supper.
