COUNTY - Anyone wishing to make donations towards a memorial to the victims of Swissair Flight 111 now has a way to do it.
The province announced last week that it has set up a trust fund after receiving requests from victims' family members, medical teams, corporations, volunteers who assisted during the tragedy and others wishing to contribute.
The man chairing the committee gathering ideas and suggestions for the memorial, former chief justice Lorne Clarke, said funds received will be used specifically for the tribute's design, construction and maintenance.
"We heard from many people who want to contribute to the memorial," Mr. Clarke said. "People have felt close to the tragedy from the beginning and they want to remain close by being part of this project. Establishment of the fund helps satisfy their requests."
Work on the memorial continues. Public meetings and responses from victims' families indicate Peggy's Cove and Blandford are the preferred locations.
When a site will be selected is unknown. Any recommendation from the committee must be approved by the provincial cabinet.
Those wishing to make a donation to the memorial can mail a cheque, payable to the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial Trust Fund, to: Government of Nova Scotia, Co-ordination and Planning Secretariat, Flight 111, P.O. Box 2732, Suite 520, Canada Trust Building, 1718 Argyle Street, Halifax, N.S., B3J 3P7.
