BAYSWATER - Construction has already started at the Bayswater location chosen as the interment site for those who died aboard Swissair Flight 111.
Heavy equipment broke ground at the site near Bayswater Beach late last week following Wednesday's announcement by former chief justice Lorne Clarke.
The chairman of the Flight 111 Memorial Advisory Committee said a number of considerations went into the selection of the Bayswater location, including geography, the wishes of the St. Margarets Bay area residents and the wishes of the victims' families.
"This is a very sensitive issue for many people," Mr. Clarke said. "We've sent a letter to the families and to area residents to indicate that burial will take place in Bayswater and the response we've received has been positive."
Marilyn Publicover, municipal councillor for the area, had previously said the community would be happy to have the burial site located there.
The interment location is at the Bayswater memorial site, one of three announced last month. The memorial advisory committee expects to make a decision on the design and construction of the memorials by the end of May.
Interment and memorial dedications will be held between September 1 and 3, when many family members will return to Nova Scotia to mark the anniversary of the crash. All 229 people aboard Flight 111 died September 2 when the passenger jet plunged into the ocean off Peggy's Cove and East Ironbound.
