Reach out and touch
A sign of our humaneness being healthy is discovered in the willingness to care -Êto visibly and concretely care -Êfor another. The IWK Telethon is truly a visible sign of the health of our humanity in this part of our country; an overwhelming and caring response by the citizens of the Maritimes; a conscious willingness to reach out and touch.
As we consciously foster that healthy characteristic of our humanity, we indeed are walking squarely in the footsteps of our Lord and Master, Jesus. So often in the gospels we read of Jesus expressing His care for another in need by reaching out and touching. The touch was one of healing, one of caring, one of acceptance, one of friendship. And in so doing He caused the light of life to rekindle and glow in the life of another.
The refugees of Kosovo, lives battered by the horrifying activity of racial cleansing, truly need someone to reach out and touch.
The abused and battered of our own communities truly need someone to reach out and touch.
The lonely, terminally ill, the unemployed and underemployed truly need someone to reach out and touch.
And in so doing, cause once again the light of life to rekindle and glow in their lives; it's the light of hope.
Our Lord has revealed to us the way to "love thy neighbour as ourself". Do not ignore the need of another. He said, for "as you are doing it to the least of these, you are doing it unto me."
It is our calling to keep our humanity healthy. So reach out and touch. Rekindle in their lives once again the light of hope, the light of possibility, the light of peace, the light of trust, the light of life.
