Roseate tern recovery project returns

posted on 06/23/10

Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation (BCAF) will once again be conducting a Roseate Tern Recovery Project for 2010.

Founded in 2003, the initiative is designed to help restore nesting populations of the seabirds in Mahone Bay, which once was the home to one-third of the entire country’s roseate tern population.

Unfortunately, since the mid-1990s, human disturbance, predators and weather have combined to deter the endangered species from nesting in the area, and BCAF is hoping to re-establish a secure nesting site for the birds this summer on Grassy Island in Mahone Bay.

Spokesman David Welsford believes public awareness was a key factor in recovering past colonies of the birds in the Mahone Bay area and to that end, BCAF will be hosting an information session on tern conservation and the status of terns in Nova Scotia which will be held at the Mahone Bay Centre community room July 8 at 7 p.m.

The evening will also include a presentation on BCAF’s work on the 2010 Roseate Tern Recovery Project’’ field season.
