The Journalism ExperienceGot some high school students involved in a student newspaper or interested in pursuing journalism as a career? Bring them to Lighthouse Publishing for a powerful journalism experience that will motivate them to even higher levels of interest and give them a frontline view of the industry.Groups of up to 10 students get a comprehensive tour of Lighthouse Publishing and see how all departments mesh – from administration to graphics to advertising to printing to new media and of course, editorial. As students tour, they can take photographs, interact and ask questions to gather details for a story they can do back at their school for their own newspaper. Part of the tour involves the students bringing a recent story and photo they’ve done at their school. After touring the facility, the group enters their story into the Lighthouse’s editing system. The rough draft is sent to the editor and the students talk with the editor about their story. Next their story is sent on to a proofreader. Again, the students meet with this person to receive feedback on their writing. The final draft is put back in the system and then the students work with the graphics department on preparing their photograph to accompany the story. The students continue in the graphics department, where they see their story and photo added to the newspaper layout. Finally, the group gets to see the story posted on Lighthouse’s website, southshorenow.ca. The Journalism Experience culminates days later when students see their story and photo in the Bridgewater Bulletin and Lunenburg Progress Enterprise and online at southshorenow.ca. This is immediate, relevant and dynamic feedback that will inspire students through accomplishment and success.
