BrooklynThe community of Brooklyn, located on the coastal side of Queens County, just to the northeast of Liverpool, has been known by several different monikers over the years.Prior to European settlement in Nova Scotia, the Mi'kmaq knew the Brooklyn area as Katkootch — "between the hills." The French were actually among the first Europeans to have a semi-permanent or permanent presence in the Brooklyn area. Famed French businessman Nicolas Denys had a strong fishing operation that worked out of what would become Brooklyn during the 1630s, around the same time that Isaac de Razilly had established a colony further up the coast near the mouth of the LaHave River. When British settlement began during the 18th century, the community was named Herring Cove, an homage to the plentiful fishing grounds found in the area. Eventually, the centre's name was changed to Brooklyn, likely because of the small stream coursing through the heart of the settlement. Today, Brooklyn is famed for being the birthplace of country music legend Hank Snow. Its main industry is the Bowater Mersey Paper Company and the community is also a well-known hot spot for birdwatchers. Each summer, the community also plays host to the Queens County Seafest — a true must "sea" for those with a passion for the Maritime way of life.
