CaledoniaThe rolling farmlands of Caledonia, located in Queens County, first attracted settlers early in the 19th century. In 1820, six Scots and an Irishman settled upon the drumlins, determined to carve out an agricultural existence on the area's rich land. But farming is not the sole element in the tale of Caledonia's history. In the late 19th century, a gold mining boom exploded in the Caledonia area. Gold was found in the nearby settlement of Whiteburn in 1884 and also subsequently near Molega Lake, spawning the creation of the Molega Gold Mining Company. Caledonia itself was connected to the rest of the region by a rail line early in the 20th century, with the first train arriving in the community in June of 1905. Today Caledonia is the nexus of the northern region of Queens County and serves as the gateway community for nearby Kejimkujik National Park.
