New Ross![]() The community at New Ross was founded in 1816, when Capt. William Ross and a group of about 170 disbanded soldiers made their way into the interior wilderness. Capt. Ross had been approached by the Earl of Dalhousie, the governor of Nova Scotia during the period, to establish an agricultural-based settlement in the province's interior. Most of the soldiers who joined Ross at the settlement — originally known as Sherbrooke — were former members of the Nova Scotia Fencibles. They were soon joined by disbanded members of the German Legion and the Newfoundland Fencibles. Today, the livelihood of many New Ross residents is not entirely different than it was for those first settlers in the area — healthy Christmas tree and forestry industries dot the landscape around New Ross and its surrounding communities, such as Harriston and The Forties. Located halfway between Kentville and Chester, New Ross is a common resting point for travellers passing between the South Shore and the Fundy Shore. Ross Farm Museum, located on Highway 12, is a popular attraction during both the summer and winter months, while the New Ross Fair is a highly anticipated annual summertime festival.
