Working for joy

The South Shore’s 50-plus residents continue to make great contributions

“Age is only a number,
a cipher for the records.
A man can’t retire his
experience … he must use it.
Experience achieves more
with less energy and time.”
— Bernard Baruch

In March of 2007, the Province of Nova Scotia introduced new rules regarding mandatory retirement on these shores.

The Act Respecting the Elimination of Mandatory Retirement effectively opened the doors for almost anyone 65 years of age and older in the province to continue working without fear of being forced into a life beyond the workplace by mandatory retirement.

At the time, Minister of Environment Mark Parent beamed about the proclamation, saying, “This change will allow seniors in Nova Scotia to continue their contribution to the workforce, if that is their wish.”

Experienced workers, the minister continued, “are a valuable resource, especially in our labour market, where the skills shortage is a real concern.”

This spring, one year after the proclamation of the act, the changes to mandatory retirement in Nova Scotia officially come into effect.

And it is with the remarkable contributions that so many of our 50-plus residents make in our region that we have prepared this very special section.

This spring’s seniors’ supplement has been crafted to honour those who, even though they may be eligible for retirement, continue to lead an active and inspiring life, working to make our communities great.
